Vincent van Gogh is 34 years old when, in February 1888, he leaves Paris and moves to Provence in search of new sources of inspiration. His discovery of the city of Arles, its surrounding countryside and its Southern light triggers a revolution in his painting and his life. The enthusiasm and energy with which Vincent throws himself into work in Arles, where he produces masterpieces such as The Sower at Sunset and the first series of Sunflowers, carry him to the point of physical and mental exhaustion and illness. In March 1889 Van Gogh voluntarily becomes an in-patient at the psychiatric hospital of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Here he finds a certain tranquillity, while at the same time continuing to paint and affirming his artistic genius in such celebrated canvases as The Starry Night and in the works in his Olive Trees and Irises series.
